Abstract:

Three accounting ledgers for what was to become the last producing malt house in San Francisco, California. Entries offer a glimpse into the economics of the malting and brewing industry on the West Coast, and bridge the period of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. There is a one week interruption in the entries because of the earthquake before they resumed business. Numbered pages have columns with various headings including, Ledger Folio, Date, Bank, Discount, Store Expense, Store Freight, Store Merchandise, Malt House Expense, Sundries, etc. Entries include customer names, supplies, expenses, amounts, totals, etc. Also includes one San Francisco Fire Department permit for underground diesel storage at the company site on Chestnut Street, dated March 26, 1948.

Bauer-Schweitzer Hop and Malt Company, located on Chestnut Street between Powell and Mason in San Francisco, California, was founded by Joseph Schweitzer and George W. Bauer around 1870. Their customers included a wide range of California breweries, among them Humboldt Brewing Co., North Pacific Brewing Co., Sunset Bottling Co., North Star Brewing Co., Anchor Shasta Brewing Co., and others.
